BOUND AWAY by CAKE

CAKE is releasing the book BOUND AWAY in tandem with BANDmade Books in San Francisco. The name of the book comes from a track off the band's most recent album, Showroom of Compassion, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart in January 2011. Of note is the band's complete involvement in all aspects of the creation of BOUND AWAY. All five band members of the band participated with:

  • The book's layout, storyboard and design.
  • Making the paper used for the book covers.
  • Carving linoleum blocks used to print the book.
  • Running the proofing presses.
  • Bookbinding.

BOUND AWAY will be released as a 5 1⁄4 x 5 1⁄4" hardcover 24-page book with 1000 numbered copies signed by all members of CAKE. The book will also include a CD single of the song. CAKE and BANDmade have decided to give book proceeds to charities, including 826 Valencia and The Hamilton Wood Type Museum.

"BOUND AWAY," tells the story of a traveling musician from the unique perspective of a band that has actually spent the better part of the past 20 years touring. It paints a realistic, and often unglamorous, picture of life on the road.

  • 24 illustrated pages using linoleum blocks hand carved by the band and volunteers
  • Printing: two-color letterpress Vandercook proofing presses, by members of CAKE and volunteers
  • Text pages: 100% post-consumer recycled paper manufactured with wind power
  • End-sheets: handmade paper made from reclaimed jute coffee sacks from a local coffee roaster
  • Covers: handmade paper made by the band using their old cotton clothing
  • Binding: hand stitched with local handspun thread waxed with beeswax from a local beehive
  • Type: Handset in Alternate Gothic No. 2 and Univers
